A very puzzled new member of our Northumberland County Republican Committee called me recently and asked, “How does this Mass Meeting thing work? How do I become a delegate to a convention? And, why do we do it this way?”
Here’s why we have Mass Meetings…
In Virginia, Republican organizations must follow rules dictated by the State Party
Plan. County committee chairmen and committee members must be elected every two
years. We do this at a Mass Meeting. Other business can be done at these meetings
if needed, such as nominations of candidates for local offices. If there are conventions
at a district level to nominate candidates for state and national offices, such as
a state House of Delegates candidate, or a federal congressional race, the delegates
to those conventions are selected at the local Mass Meetings. This year [2010] our

(2) elect a chairman of the Northumberland County Republican Party to a two-

Any Northumberland County registered voter may take part in our Mass Meeting. Registration begins at the Northumberland Library in Heathsville at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 4. You will be asked to present identification and your name will be checked with the voter registration list. Only registered voters may vote at a Mass Meeting, but guests and observers are welcome. There are no fees for participation, but a voluntary $15 contribution is accepted for committee member and delegate filings.
This is what happens at the Mass Meeting…
The meeting agenda will be available soon. Forms will be available to complete and sign if you wish to be a Committee member and/or a delegate to the 1st District convention. These will be reviewed and presented to the meeting by the chairman of the credentials committee, for approval. The chairman of the nominations committee will present candidates for committee chairman and a vote will be taken to elect a chairman. Other committee officers are elected later, at the first regular Committee meeting, which may be immediately following adjournment of the Mass Meeting.
